OVERVIEW
The "TeleEMG Calculator©" (the Calculator) was developed by Joe F. Jabre M.D. and Byron T. Salzsieder, SM. The Calculator uses the Mean Related Values (MRV) technique (developed by the authors) to provide for instantaneous comparisons of patient Nerve Conduction Data to a set of Age/Sex matched Control Values collected by the authors from a Control Population. The results are displayed, next to the raw data, as MRV scores or number of (+ or -) Standard Deviations from a statistically validated Mean. For instance, an MRV score of 0 means that the value is no different from the control Mean and is therefore normal; an MRV score of -2.0 is two Standard Deviations below the control Mean and therefore borderline; and an MRV score of -2.5 is abnormal.

THE CALCULATOR

To load the proper set of Control Values, the Calculator needs certain data to be inputted. These are the patient's Age*, Sex* and Height* (in cm). The asterisk next to these names indicates that you must input data into these fields in order for the Calculator to work properly. Temperature input is optional, but it is a good habit to measure the patient's skin temperature and maintain it at an acceptable level during the study to avoid artifactual nerve conduction recordings. You will note that there is a brief delay after you input (or change) the patient's Age and Sex. Do not interrupt; the Calculator is loading the appropriate set of Control Values.

DATA INPUT

Once the Patient Information data has been inputted, you may proceed by inputting nerve conduction data in the appropriate fields and tabbing to the next field. The Calculator automatically displays the MRV scores next to the patient's data. In order to avoid accidental data input into the MRV fields, the Calculator is designed to automatically skip these fields. In addition, the Calculator allows you to print your data once you are done for possible inclusion with your report. Caution: Automatic skipping and data printing do not work properly on all browsers. When automatic skipping does not work, make sure you do not accidentally input data into the MRV fields.

REPORT GENERATION: PRINTING YOUR CALCULATOR

Once finished with your data input, you may print the Calculator on your local printer to make it part of your EMG report, PROVIDED THAT YOU AGREE WITH THE DISCLAIMER BELOW. The Calculator pages have been left intentionally without their web borders for this purpose.

BROWSER REQUIREMENTS

In order for the Calculator to function properly, you need to be working with a browser which supports JavaScript such as Netscape 4.0 or higher or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher..

DISCLAIMER

In order to ensure proper functioning of the Calculator, we have tried it with various browsers (and different versions) and on Mac and PC platforms. Although the calculations have proved consistently accurate, the authors make no claims, implicit or otherwise, regarding the proper functioning of the Calculator given that browsers and JavaScript standards are consistently being updated and changed. As in every case where Control Values are used, the authors, and the institutions with which they are affiliated, make no claims as to the validity or appropriateness of their use outside of their own patient population. EMGers are encouraged to develop their own set of Control Values.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The authors wish to acknowledge Norman Leafer's help in diligently inputting and re-inputting Control Values and for constructive criticism.
